Technical FAQs

Answers to common questions about connecting, configuring, and peering at Accra-IX from BGP setup to IPv6 support and network redundancy.

Accra-IX (Accra Internet Exchange) is a non-profit, carrier-neutral internet exchange point in Accra, Ghana, where local networks connect directly with one another to exchange traffic. By keeping traffic within Ghana instead of routing it through international hubs, Accra-IX helps reduce latency, lower costs, and strengthen the resilience of the country's internet ecosystem.

Membership is open to any organisation with a public Autonomous System Number (ASN) — including ISPs, mobile network operators, content providers, cloud platforms, CDNs, enterprises, and research or academic institutions. Whether you're a small regional ISP or a global content network, if you have traffic to exchange in Ghana, Accra-IX is built for you.

To connect, you'll need a public ASN with route/route6 objects registered in a recognised Internet Routing Registry (IRR), a minimum announcement of a /24 (IPv4) or /48 (IPv6), a reachable technical contact for operational issues, and a current PeeringDB record. Our team can guide you through each requirement during onboarding.

IPv6 isn't mandatory, but it's strongly encouraged. Accra-IX's peering LAN is fully dual-stack, and the majority of networks already peering with us support IPv6 — so enabling it early gets you the most value from the exchange.

No. Accra-IX operates on a settlement-free basis — you pay a flat port and membership fee, and there are no additional charges based on how much traffic you exchange or in which direction.

Most members go from application to live traffic in 2–4 business days, though this can vary depending on cross-connect lead time at your chosen core site and how quickly your BGP configuration is ready.

Our Configuration Guide covers BGP session setup, IRR registration, and RPKI validation step by step. If your question isn't answered there, our technical team is on hand to help directly.
